I had the pleasure to photograph an energetic young girl named Emily. Emily’s passion is dance. Her mother contacted me for a portrait session to start a portfolio for her daughter. My goal in a studio portrait session is to catch the subject with various expressions and from different angles. I want the session to be unique for every subject and not follow a standard recipe of poses. Most importantly, I want the subject to see themselves in a type of photo that they have never seen themselves in previously. I was fortunate that Emily wanted to express herself from the start. Getting her to relax and not feel nervous took little to no effort on my part. She wanted to have fun and model for this session just as much as I was looking forward to shooting it. After a few headshots and some posed half-body portraits, her mom turned on the music and let Emily feel comfortable in what she likes to do best - dance. Emily danced, performed many of her own poses, and just had fun. After several clothing changes and some brief shooting outside, we wrapped it up. In this post are some of my favorite photos from the shoot.
